Hello Lisa,
The child theme of Free theme and Parent theme of premium theme will not work. You need the respected theme parent and child. You can use the codes on Child theme of free theme to parent theme of pro theme. Please try this once.
P.S. you need to have its own child theme for the respected parent theme.
