uffff, I figured it out: I use WP Rocket as caching/optimizing tool and I’m happy with it. Deactivating solves the problem.
WP Rocket has a lot of setting possibilities. I have to figure out which one is the villain.
btw: the menu worked fine when the browsers width is enough small that the menu changed to the burger type.
